Port Orchard Farmers Market Supports Resolution Affirming Food as a Human Right

The Port Orchard Farmers Market is proud to support the recent resolution adopted by the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights declaring access to food a fundamental human right. The resolution recognizes that all people deserve access to food that is adequate, nutritious, safe, culturally appropriate, and produced in ways that support both community and environmental health. It also acknowledges that food insecurity continues to affect many members of our community and calls on local organizations, governments, and partners to take meaningful action to strengthen our regional food system.

Food Security Resolution

At the Port Orchard Farmers Market, this work is already central to our mission. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the local food system, we support small farms and producers while helping ensure that fresh, locally grown food is accessible to everyone in our community.

Each season, the market works to advance food access by:
  • Supporting local farmers and small food businesses
  • Accepting and facilitating SNAP, SNAP Market Match, WIC, and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits
  • Partnering with community organizations addressing food insecurity
  • Creating welcoming community spaces where people can connect with local food and with one another

Farmers markets play a unique role in strengthening resilient food systems. By connecting farmers directly with their communities, markets help ensure that local food remains available, accessible, and rooted in the places where it is grown. We are honored to stand alongside community partners working to advance food justice throughout Kitsap County and remain committed to doing our part to ensure that every neighbor has access to fresh, nutritious, locally grown, and culturally appropriate food.

Port Orchard's source for local products since 1978.
